The  1/2" Float Brass valve has been the staple valve to use for many years.  This valve accesses the WC cistern from the side and is often referred to as a "Side entry Valve".

BS1212 part 2 is the British Standard number for brass diaphragm type float operated valves.

It is a fully serviceable valve as it can be broken down to its individual parts for repair or replacement and it can also be converted for a High or Low water supply.  The valve is actioned by a ball or float (not supplied) with an internal thread  which winds on to the overhooked arm.
