2023 Blog - JevonKennedy, Managing Director

2023 has been an interesting and eventful year for us at Hursts.

To begin with, we started 2023 proud and humbled
to have been voted the UK`s Favourite Local Business 2022. This accolade was
not gained due to a relevant judging panel making this decision, but rather our
customers and our local community putting forward more votes to our business
than any other across the entire UK! This signifies that there is a strong
sense of community and loyalty on the Island like no other.

This year (2024) see`s us celebrating our 165th Birthday and we are extremely proud to have served our local community for so long. Over the last few years we have all been effected by World events which have influenced outlooks. Most of us have recognized further how important it is to shop local and how valuable it is to still have a retail experience which involves an interaction with another human being who can offer genuine help and advice.

Community Highlights

We launched our very own yellow bucket, possibly influenced by arguably a more famous orange one! With every yellow bucket sold, we donate 50p to Mountbatten who continue to help and make a difference to local people.
(Mountbatten Buckets are available in all our Branches)

We cycled around the Isle of Wight for the 2nd consecutive year, our chosen charity of 2023 was Home-Start IW and various fund raising activity across all our Branches helped raise awareness for Home-Start IW as well as necessary funds

We sold Tin Openers, Dish Brushes and Washing up Liquid at a reduced price over 3 months, encouraging these much needed products to be donated to the IW Foodbank and now have donation drop off points at our Newport and Ryde Branches for essential non-food items.

We have been proud supporters of IW Day now for a number of years, distributing IW Day bunting to the public throughout all our Branches and hosting `Nipper` the IW Day Mascot visits in most of our Branches throughout the Summer.
And we managed to participate in the Newport Illuminated Carnival with an iconic Hurst navy blue van, helping to promote Home-Start IW and collecting funds alongside volunteers from the charity.
In 2023 we continued to donate every penny of every carrier bag sale to good causes and local charities.

We hosted our very first `Celebration Day` as a `Thank You` to all our customers, giving away Goodie Bags, offering big discounts and refreshments. Many of our loyal customers visited us that day to celebrate with us.

Our product range continues to evolve with investments and space changes made to enhance the customer experience which considers changes in shopping habits. Operational and technical investment has also been made with the customer in mind.

We now launch monthly product promotions, focus on value with remaining competitive at the heart of our strategy.

It might surprise you to know we sell daily to mainland customers also through our website with competitive delivery rates and we continue to deliver to any address islandwide free of charge (orders £20 or more).

We are proud of the `old fashioned values` many of our customers would associate us
with and this point of difference is essential to our future. We also continue to evolve as necessary to be able to thrive whilst considering the challenges that come with trading in more recent times.

We remain Island No1 for key cutting offering the most value and an accessible Islandwide
service when you consider we have 6 locations.

We look forward to serving the local community for many years to come and I would like
to take this opportunity to once more give a huge THANK YOU to all our customers and business partners for their loyalty and support, every time you choose to try Hurst first, we appreciate you doing so.

Thank you for shopping with us.

We hope the Christmas Tree added to the roof of our Newport Branch added some festivity to the local area.

Wishing you all a healthy and fortunate New Year, from all of us at ‘ Hursts`.
